How We Celebrated Awurudu.

To start off with let me explain what Awurudu is….

Aluth Avurudda, is the new year of the Sinhalese people in Sri Lanka. According to Sinhalese astrology, New Year begins when the sun moves from Meena Rashiya (the house of Pisces) to Mesha Rashiya (the house of Aries). The traditional New Year begins at a time determined by astrological calculations. This year Sinhalese New Year happened dawn at 10.17 a.m on the 14th April. In order to welcome the new year the Sinhalese families carries out a variety of rituals, customs, and ceremonies in accordance with auspicious times.

Well for me this used to be just a holiday from work, but this year we got the chance to go to Polgahawella to celebrate Awurudu with my husband’s family.
